The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a $62.13 million aid package to support a comprehensive project aimed at rebuilding Sudan's social sector. This announcement was made in an official press release from the bank.

The aid package is designed to rebuild key infrastructure damaged by ongoing conflict in Sudan and to restore vital services in healthcare, education, and water supply. Funding includes $44.57 million from the Transition Support Facility and an additional $17.56 million from the African Development Fund, which provides financial support to low-income countries.

The project will be implemented between 2025 and 2027 and will focus on the states of Al-Gezira, Sennar, Nile, and White Nile. It is structured around three main components: strengthening social infrastructure and systems, building community capacity, and supporting the management and implementation of AfDB initiatives.

"This project is a significant milestone in restoring Sudanese lives and livelihoods. By re-establishing access to clean water, healthcare, and essential infrastructure, we are not only addressing immediate humanitarian needs but also laying the foundation for long-term resilience and sustainable development," stated Mary Monyau, AfDB's Country Manager in Sudan.

As of June, the number of people displaced by the civil war that erupted in Sudan in April 2023 has surpassed 4 million. Many of those displaced are facing poor conditions due to severe funding shortages.

The conflict in Sudan broke out between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the national army in April 2023, leading to a protracted civil war and a deepening humanitarian crisis.

Additional context
International organizations and humanitarian agencies continue to call for increased support for Sudan, warning that without urgent financial intervention, the crisis could further escalate and regional stability may be at risk. The AfDB's commitment aims to mobilize further international assistance and draw attention to the urgent needs in Sudan.
