Spotify Wrapped: Burna Boy is the most streamed African artist in Sub-Saharan Africa once again

burna

Burna Boy has emerged as the most streamed African artist in Sub Saharan-Africa (SSA) on Spotify for the second year in a row, according to Spotify Wrapped 2023, the annual data-led review of how people listened to music and podcasts on the platform.

  • Burna Boy remains the most streamed African artist in Sub-Saharan Africa on Spotify for the second consecutive year.
  • Davido's "Timeless" album leads in streaming, and Asake, a rising artist, secured two albums on the top streamed list.
  • "Calm Down," featuring Selena Gomez, is the first time an African artist-led track has gained over 1 billion streams.

This year's Spotify Wrapped 2023 also showed Nigeria's dominance in the music scene across the continent, with Asake, Davido, and Omah Lay occupying a spot on the top ten list. Ayra Starr, on the other hand, landed at number 11, narrowly missing out on the top ten list, despite being the most streamed female artist in SSA.

Asiwaju by Ruger was ranked the most popular track in the region, followed by Ayra Starr's Rush. A host of other Nigerian tracks also make the list, including Asake's Lonely At The Top, the most streamed track in Nigeria this year. Tyler ICU is the sole South African with Mnike, featuring DJ Maphorisa, Nandipha808, Ceeka RSA & Tyron Dee, while Libianca's People, released almost a year ago, landed in the eighth spot.

Davido's album Timeless is the most streamed album in SSA, and two tracks from the album, Feel and Unavailable, featuring Musa Keys, are among the top ten most streamed tracks in SSA. Asake, relatively unknown a few years ago, now has two albums, Work of Art and Mr. Money With The Vibe, on the top streamed list in Sub-Saharan Africa.

On the global stage, an African artist-led track has achieved a significant milestone for the first time ever. Rema is the top exported artist in SSA, thanks to the popularity of Calm Down, featuring Selena Gomez, which is also the most exported track from SSA. The track has gained over 1 billion streams on Spotify and emerged as the eighth most streamed track globally.

This achievement is remarkable, considering African tracks were mostly confined to the continent only a few years ago. African artists who have made an impact both on the continent and also on the global stage are featured on Spotify's Gone Abroad Presents…Global African Hits of 2023.

Spotify has also launched Wrapped Mapped to showcase local listening trends from around the world, highlighting the songs that have soundtracked throughout the year since January 1.
