Zimbabwe Bets on Lithium Price Recovery to Justify $270M Project

Zimbabwe's Kuvimba Mining House is poised to finalize a $270 million lithium project deal with two Chinese companies this month, despite the recent decline in lithium prices. This agreement includes the construction of a 600,000 metric-ton-per-year lithium concentrator in Sandawana, Zimbabwe. Trevor Barnard, the CEO of Kuvimba Mining, disclosed that the company's decision hinges on forecasts predicting a recovery in lithium prices.

Market analysts have forecasted a rebound in lithium prices due to strong electric vehicle sales in China and the shutdown of several lithium mines. While it is acknowledged that prices are unlikely to return to the historic highs of 2022, the exceptional quality and substantial reserves of resources at the Sandawana mine present compelling reasons to advance with the project.

Since 2021, Zimbabwe has cemented its status as Africa's largest lithium producer, attracting over $1 billion in investments into its lithium sector. Much of this investment has come from Chinese companies, eager to bolster Beijing's dominance in the global battery metal value chain.
