The United States Armed Forces have delivered a shipment of "critical" military supplies to Nigeria as part of bilateral security cooperation. This was announced by the US Africa Command (AFRICOM).
"The US Armed Forces delivered critical military supplies to our Nigerian partners in Abuja. This shipment supports ongoing Nigerian operations and highlights our security partnership," stated an AFRICOM post on social media platform X.
In November 2025, US President Donald Trump designated Nigeria as a "country of particular concern" and announced plans to "investigate the mass killings of Christians by radical Islamists." Following this, he told journalists that the US does not rule out the possibility of using military force in Nigeria.
Later, media reported that AFRICOM had prepared three plans for the US Department of Defense to combat radical Islamists in Nigeria, one of which could involve the deployment of US fighter aircraft to the African country.
After Trump's statements, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) declared that claims of a "genocide against Christians" in Nigeria were unfounded and only heightened tensions in the region. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova also called on the US to respect international law.
Nigeria has suffered from terrorist attacks and bandit activities for many years, particularly in the country's northeast. The insurgent group Boko Haram*, which emerged in Nigeria in 2009, remains highly active in the region. The ensuing conflict, involving other jihadist groups, has resulted in over 40,000 deaths and the displacement of approximately 2 million people.
