The US government has notified Congress of its intention to transfer two C-130H Hercules military transport aircraft to Botswana free of charge, the US Embassy in Botswana announced via its social media channels. Each aircraft is valued at approximately $12 million.
According to the embassy, the donation is intended to strengthen the Botswana Defence Force's strategic air capabilities, with particular emphasis on humanitarian response, peacekeeping operations and regional security. The planned delivery builds on recent defence cooperation between the two countries after a similar aircraft was handed over in June 2024.
Military aircraft transfers of this kind are often accompanied by pilot and crew training, maintenance assistance and logistical support to ensure safe integration and sustained operations. For Botswana, the additional C-130Hs are expected to enhance rapid troop and cargo movement, disaster relief and medical evacuation capacity, and interoperability with regional and international partners.
