UN Calls for Increased Humanitarian Aid to Sudan as Conflict Enters Fourth Year

The United Nations has called for stepped-up aid to Sudan on the fourth anniversary of the outbreak of hostilities, UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan Denise Brown said at a briefing.

"Don't call [the situation in Sudan] a 'forgotten crisis.' I refer to it as a crisis that has been neglected. ... We really need to focus on finding a solution, and while that solution is being pursued, funding must be allocated to meet all the needs of the Sudanese people," she said.

According to Brown, the situation in the country is evolving along a "grim scenario" of repeated abuses. In Darfur, mass acts of physical violence against civilians are being recorded. Over the past year, humanitarian workers in Darfur have provided assistance to nearly 2,500 survivors of sexual violence.

Additionally, approximately 6,000 people have died in the city of El Fasher over the past three days. In the Blue Nile region, about 30,000 people have been forced to flee their homes.

Brown called on the international community to more actively address the root causes of the conflict, including halting arms supplies and facilitating a ceasefire, emphasizing that humanitarian workers cannot replace political solutions.

Meanwhile, funding remains significantly below required levels. The UN highlighted that in 2025, the aid plan received only 35% of the necessary funding, and in 2026, just 16%. This directly affects the ability to support Sudan's population, the organization added.

Earlier in April, several NGOs reported that approximately 29 million Sudanese are experiencing acute food shortages, with millions of families across the country eating only once a day.

The civil war in Sudan between the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the regular army began in April 2023.
