Senior Advisor to US President Donald Trump for Africa, Massad Boulos, held talks with the Deputy Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Saddam Haftar. The parties discussed unifying the country's armed forces following the division of Libya in 2011. Boulos announced this on social media.
Also participating in the meeting were the head of the Libyan Reconstruction Fund, Belgasem Haftar, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh.
"In Benghazi, I held productive meetings with LNA Deputy Commander Saddam Haftar. We discussed US support for Libya's efforts to unify its armed forces and noted how Libya's growing partnership with American companies helps unlock its enormous potential," stated the US diplomat.
During the discussions, Boulos also emphasized the role of a unified budget for western and eastern Libya, as well as Central Bank support in strengthening the country's financial stability and improving the welfare of the Libyan people.
Earlier in January, Trump's advisor held talks with the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity (GNU) in western Libya, Abdul Hamid Dbeibah. The meeting focused on efforts to restore a unified state.
