Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has sent congratulations to Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema on his re-election for a second term, the administration of the East African head of state announced on August 18.
"On behalf of the government and the people of the United Republic of Tanzania, I congratulate you, Your Excellency, on your victory," the congratulatory message read.
Hassan noted that Hichilema's victory is a testament to the confidence that Zambians place in his leadership. She also reaffirmed Tanzania's intention to continue close cooperation with Zambia, building on the historical ties between the two neighboring countries.
The Tanzanian president also expressed hope for further strengthening the "deep, historical, and fraternal bonds" between the two countries for the benefit of their peoples, and wished the Zambian leader success as he begins his second term.
Earlier in August, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema was re-elected for a second term. He received 60% of the vote in the general elections, while his main rival, Brian Mundubile, garnered 38%.
The presidential elections in Zambia took place on August 13, with over 8.7 million registered voters. The main contest was between President Hichilema and opposition candidate Mundubile. The Electoral Commission of Zambia temporarily suspended vote counting and the announcement of results due to incidents of attacks on its staff.
