Tanzania, Uganda, and international energy trader Vitol Bahrain have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at transforming the port city of Tanga into a regional energy hub for East and Central Africa, according to a press release from Tanzania's Ministry of Energy.
The signing ceremony took place on August 6 at the State House in Dar es Salaam, in the presence of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan and Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. The document was signed by the CEOs of the two countries' national oil companies — Tanzania's Petroleum Development Corporation and Uganda's National Oil Company — as well as Vitol Bahrain head Tom Baker.
"This memorandum marks the beginning of a new era of regional energy integration, in which Tanga will become a center for value addition through refining, storage, logistics, trade, and industrialization," said Tanzania's Minister of Energy, Deogratius Ndejembi.
Uganda's Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Monica Musenero, called the agreement "a powerful demonstration of regional cooperation and the realization of the leaders' long-standing vision of a united and prosperous Africa."
The project will work in conjunction with the 60,000-barrel-per-day oil refinery in Hoima, Uganda, enabling the countries to benefit through value addition rather than exporting crude oil.
The signing of the memorandum was a key outcome of Museveni's two-day official visit to Tanzania, during which the leaders also discussed expanding cooperation in trade, investment, infrastructure, tourism, and regional security.
In March, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan launched the construction of an oil terminal at the port of Dar es Salaam.
