In the city of El Fasher, North Darfur, Sudan, at least 55 people were killed and several injured over two days of heavy shelling by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Sudan Tribune, citing the national army, reported on the escalation.

According to the military, on April 21, RSF fighters fired around 250 artillery shells (120mm), causing the deaths of 47 civilians. On April 22, eight more people lost their lives and 20 were wounded, including women and children.

The humanitarian situation in El Fasher is dire. Residents are suffering from acute shortages of food, medical supplies, and clean water. The fighting has intensified, particularly after RSF forces seized the nearby Zamzam refugee camp on April 14.

Earlier in April, another RSF attack on El Fasher resulted in 35 deaths and 40 injuries.

The civil conflict between the RSF and Sudan's regular army began in April 2023. Since then, more than 20,000 people have died, around 14 million have been displaced, and 25 million require urgent humanitarian aid.

In late January, Sudan's army claimed it had broken the RSF siege of Khartoum. On March 27, government forces reported regaining full control of the capital. Sudan's leadership has since announced preparations to transition to civilian governance
