Sudan Accuses UAE of Shielding RSF on International Platforms

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been actively supporting the "Rapid Support Forces" (RSF) on international platforms, defending the rebels from condemnation and countermeasures, Sudan's foreign ministry announced.

"The ministry condemns the fierce hostile efforts of the Abu Dhabi regime—a regional sponsor of the terrorist organization RSF—against Sudan on international forums. This marks a continuation of the ongoing aggression against the Sudanese people, their nation-state, and their economic, cultural, and historical capabilities, conducted by the rebels," the statement read.

According to the diplomatic department, during meetings of the Non-Aligned Movement at the expert level in New York, the UAE delegation attempted to remove parts of the resolution showing solidarity with Sudan's government during the civil war and sought to refrain from condemning the RSF in the final document.

Furthermore, the ministry reported that the Middle Eastern country also tried to insert a paragraph referencing a parallel Sudanese government created by rebels and the opposition. The Sudanese department declared that Abu Dhabi's actions violate international norms and traditions of collective diplomacy.

"The destructive role of the Abu Dhabi regime at multilateral meetings, especially concerning Sudan, has become evident. Such efforts were repeated at numerous meetings. The primary aim of the UAE's participation in these meetings has consistently been to prevent the condemnation of the rebels, avoid direct responsibility for the crimes of genocide, terrorism, and blatant human rights violations committed by RSF, and call for the violation of Sudanese sovereignty," the department emphasized.

The Sudanese civil war between the RSF and the regular army began in April 2023. Sudan first accused the UAE of aiding the rebels in November 2023. According to Sudanese authorities, aid for the RSF is routed through Chad. Both Chad and the UAE deny involvement in the conflict, arms supplies, or support for any side.

Sudan filed a case against the UAE at the International Court of Justice in early March. Later in March, Yasir al-Atta, a member of Sudan's Sovereign Council, stated that the country might take "retaliatory measures" against the UAE over the alleged support for the rebels. The case proceedings began in early April, but on May 5, the International Court of Justice dismissed the case, citing a lack of proper jurisdiction. In response to the dismissal, Sudan's foreign ministry announced that it would continue to seek recognition of the UAE's role in the genocide through other international forums.

In May, Sudan's Security and Defense Council declared its decision to sever diplomatic ties with the Emirates and labeled the UAE as an aggressor state.
