Senegal's President, Bassiru Diomaye Faye, expressed his gratitude to the U.S. President Donald Trump for his peacekeeping efforts in resolving the conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). He conveyed this thanks during a meeting in Washington.
"I would also like to thank you for your commitment to global peace and for the incredible diplomatic success you have achieved in the DRC, as my colleagues have already mentioned. This brought an end to a long-standing war that claimed many lives, and fortunately, you were here to conclude a 30-year war," Faye stated.
The Senegalese leader further voiced support, on behalf of the African continent, for all peace restoration initiatives in Sudan, Libya, and the Sahel.
"Mr. President, as you can see, conducting business is only possible in conditions of peace and security, and you are building peace worldwide to enable more profitable investments. The entire world is grateful to you for this," he added.
A mini-summit is taking place in Washington from July 9-11, with the participation of leaders from Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mauritania, and Senegal. During a working lunch with African counterparts, Trump announced his intention to visit Africa during his second term. Additionally, the President of Gabon urged the U.S. to invest in mineral resource processing in the African country.
On June 27, under U.S. mediation, the DRC and Rwanda signed a peace agreement. Ministers of foreign affairs from both countries represented the governments as signatories. The agreement's provisions include respect for territorial integrity, a ban on military actions, the disarmament of non-state armed groups, and the establishment of a security coordination mechanism.
