Senegal's Ambassador to Niger, Mahamadou Sarr, held a series of meetings with authorities in Niamey as part of ongoing efforts to normalize relations between the two countries, initiated in May 2025.
On September 2, the diplomat was received by the Chairman of the Consultative Council for Reform, Mamoudou Jingarey, and the following day met with the Deputy Head of Niamey's administration to discuss decentralized cooperation. These visits took place three weeks after Sarr presented his credentials to the Head of State, Abdourahamane Tchiani.
The current initiatives are part of the normalization process that began with the visit of Senegal's Minister of Defense, General Biram Diop, to Niamey in May. During that visit, the Senegalese minister stated that President Bassirou Diomaye Faye reaffirmed Senegal's determination to work closely with Niger to strengthen bilateral relations.
A key focus of Ambassador Sarr's talks in Niamey was decentralized cooperation. The diplomat highlighted existing partnerships between Niger's capital and Senegalese cities such as Dakar, Kébémer, and Louga, as well as with several other African metropolitan areas. He emphasized the potential for complementary cooperation between the coastal city of Dakar and landlocked Niamey.
