A delegation of deputies from Russia's State Duma is set to travel to Burundi as international observers during the upcoming parliamentary elections. This announcement was made by State Duma member Nikolay Novichkov at the Africa Day celebration held at the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Novichkov pointed out that visits by Russian parliamentary delegations to the African continent are relatively rare, but there are ongoing efforts to make such exchanges a regular practice. He emphasized Russia's intention to foster a shared political and parliamentary life with African partners, highlighting the country's commitment to deepening cooperation with African nations.
Earlier, the Speaker of Burundi's Senate welcomed the growing parliamentary interaction between Russia and African countries and expressed gratitude for the willingness of Russian lawmakers to serve as international observers during the National Assembly elections in June.
In 2024, Burundi's National Assembly Chairman Gelase Daniel Ndabirabe and the country's electoral commission head Prosper Ntahorwamiye visited Russia to observe the Russian presidential election.
Such initiatives underline the expanding collaboration and mutual support between Russia and African countries, strengthening ties and promoting transparent, democratic processes across both regions.
