The Russian Center in the city of Alexandria, Egypt, marked the 55th anniversary of the opening of the Aswan High Dam on January 24. The dam was constructed between 1960 and 1971 under the guidance of Soviet specialists. The Russian Center announced this on social media.
Addressing the event, Deputy Head of Rossotrudnichestvo's Representative Office in Egypt, Arseniy Matyushenko, emphasized that Russia and Egypt have long been connected by a partnership.
"The Aswan Dam became one of the first symbols of this partnership, and the construction of the El-Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant today continues the good tradition of cooperation, strengthening the strategic nature of Russian-Egyptian relations," he stated.
The event was attended by local residents, journalists, and Egyptian students. The guest of honor was Professor of Alexandria University and Head of the Department of Irrigation and Hydrology, Haytham Mahmoud Awad. He spoke about the technical aspects of the dam's construction and its significance for Egypt's development.
"In conclusion, the participants noted the importance of events that highlight significant chapters in the shared history of Russia and Egypt for strengthening relations between the two countries," added the Russian Center.
Construction of the Aswan High Dam on the Nile River, standing 111 meters tall, began in 1960, and the facility was opened in 1971. The chief engineer of the project was the Soviet specialist, Deputy Head and Chief Engineer of the S.Ya. Zhuk Research Institute "Gidroproekt," Doctor of Technical Sciences, Nikolai Malyshev.
In October of last year, Russian and Egyptian Presidents Vladimir Putin and Abdel Fattah al-Sisi gave the signal for the installation of the reactor vessel for Unit 1 of the El-Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant. In his address to the ceremony participants, Putin stated that Russia would continue to assist Egypt at all stages of the project's implementation.
