Russia and Mauritania will sign agreements on extradition and the transfer of convicted persons to their countries of citizenship at the third Russia-Africa Summit, to be held on October 28-29 in Moscow, Russia's Ministry of Justice announced following negotiations on developing partnership with the Mauritanian side in combating crime from August 31 to September 3.
"The texts of two international treaties — on extradition and on the transfer of persons sentenced to imprisonment to their states of citizenship — have been finalized. The signing of the treaties, scheduled to take place during the Russia-Africa Summit ..., will bring cooperation between the two countries in combating crime to a qualitatively new level," the statement said.
Consultations, meetings, and seminars with the leadership of Mauritania's justice authorities were held in Nouakchott as part of the implementation of the cooperation agreement between the justice ministries of Russia and Mauritania, signed on the sidelines of the XIV St. Petersburg International Legal Forum.
"During the meetings, promising areas for the development of the justice system, issues of legal services, and personnel training were discussed," the release stated.
Representatives of Russia's Ministry of Justice noted that the sides also agreed to begin expert work on bilateral treaties on mutual legal assistance in civil and criminal matters and to hold joint seminars in the field of justice.
In August, Russian Minister of Economic Development Maxim Reshetnikov and Mauritania's Minister of Economy and Development Abdallahi Ould Souleymane Ould Cheikh Sidya signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening economic cooperation, developing investments, and increasing trade turnover between the countries.
