Red Cross Delivers 18 Vehicles to DRC to Support Ebola Response

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has delivered 18 vehicles to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to support the fight against the Ebola outbreak, the Uganda Red Cross Society announced on July 14.

"The Uganda Red Cross successfully delivered 18 vehicles to Kanara, from where they will be transported to the Democratic Republic of Congo to support the ongoing Ebola response. These vehicles will ... strengthen relief efforts and enhance the capacity to reach communities affected by the outbreak," the statement said.

Earlier in July, the number of confirmed Ebola cases in the DRC reached 2,011, including 754 fatalities.

That same month, Uganda's Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Diana Atwine stated that the country had managed to contain the spread of Ebola, nearly two months after declaring an outbreak that followed imported cases from neighboring DRC.

Ebola is a severe, acute viral disease with a high fatality rate. Transmission occurs through direct contact with the blood, secretions, organs, or other bodily fluids of infected individuals, as well as with contaminated surfaces and materials.
