Due to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, the Nigerian government is readying an emergency evacuation of its citizens from both countries. This was announced by Nigeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"The Nigerian government remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens at home and abroad. Authorities are working closely with international partners and local entities to facilitate a timely and secure evacuation of Nigerians from affected areas," the statement read.
The ministry advised Nigerians caught in the conflict to adhere to all necessary safety measures and "immediately contact the nearest Nigerian embassy for registration and further instructions."
"The Nigerian government reiterates its call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and strongly urges all parties involved in the conflict to choose dialogue, respect international humanitarian law, and prioritize the protection of civilians," the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs added.
The ministry also "expressed gratitude" to its diplomatic missions in Tel Aviv (Israel) and Tehran (Iran) for their "dedication and efforts in supporting the Nigerian community during this challenging time."
Earlier in June, Nigeria condemned Israel's attacks on Iran and called for an end to the hostilities. The country expressed "serious concern over the developments," urged an immediate cessation of combat, and recommended both sides exhibit "maximum restraint in the interest of regional and global peace."
On the night of Friday, June 13, Israel launched strikes on Iranian territory, targeting key facilities linked to the nation's nuclear program. At least 78 people were killed, and over 230 were injured. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the strikes may continue. In retaliation, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed that Israel's actions would not go unpunished.
