Niger Exits International Organization of French-speaking Nations

10-9

In a significant geopolitical shift, Niger's military government has officially withdrawn from the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), marking a further distancing from France, its former colonial ruler. This exit follows Niger's suspension from the 88-member organization after the coup last July that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.

The OIF had called for Bazoum's release and a return to democratic governance, demands that the junta has consistently disregarded while continuing to detain both Bazoum and his wife. The decision to exit the OIF indicates Niger's alignment with other military regimes in the region, such as Mali and Burkina Faso, as well as a growing relationship with Russia.

This move also underscores Niger's broader anti-colonial rhetoric, exemplified by its recent replacement of the French-written national anthem with a new composition that celebrates the nation's struggle for independence. As Niger navigates this new geopolitical direction, its withdrawal from the Francophonie reflects a definitive statement against colonial ties and a push towards asserting its sovereignty.
