Most Forest Fires Contained in Algeria

Authorities in Algeria have contained and extinguished most of the forest fires, except for one blaze in the difficult-to-access mountainous terrain of Skikda province, the newspaper Ennaharonline.com reported on August 30, citing the country's civil defense directorate.

According to the directorate, two aircraft have been dispatched to Skikda to assist in extinguishing the fire.

The situation is currently stable, but rescue services continue to monitor potentially hazardous areas and remain on full alert.

As noted by Anadolu Agency, a total of 123 fire outbreaks were recorded across the country, 118 of which were contained on August 29.

Earlier in August, 12 people died and 54 others were injured in large-scale forest fires in Algeria. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune declared three days of national mourning.

Niger's President Abdourahamane Tchiani and Mali's government sent condolences to the Algerian leader following the tragedy. African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat and the Russian Embassy in Algeria also expressed their condolences.
