The BRICS nations are seeking to secure a permanent seat for Africa on the United Nations Security Council. The country representing the continent will be chosen later. Reuters reports this information based on sources familiar with the draft of the joint statement.
According to the agency's sources, the joint statement following the BRICS summit indicates the group's intention to support Brazil and India as permanent members of the UN Security Council. However, the members could not reach a consensus on which African country should represent the continent, deciding to propose a candidate at a later date.
Sources also noted changes in the document's phrasing regarding global conflicts. Specifically, the organization is ready to "strengthen its stance" on conflicts in the Middle East. Additionally, concerning trade, BRICS countries will continue to criticize the tariff policies of U.S. President Donald Trump.
The BRICS summit is taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from July 6-7, under the theme "Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance." Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is attending the summit in person, while Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to join via video link.
The Presidents of Brazil and Nigeria have already held a meeting on the sidelines of the summit.
