On May 22, 2025, Valentina Matvienko, Chair of the Federation Council, met with Margarida Talapa, Speaker of Mozambique's Assembly, and Simplice Mathieu Sarandji, President of the National Assembly of the Central African Republic (CAR). The meetings took place during the XI Nevsky International Environmental Congress in St. Petersburg, as reported by the Federation Council Press Service.
During talks with the head of Mozambique's parliament, Matvienko praised the strong ties between the two countries, noting the Soviet Union's support for Mozambique during its fight for independence. Both sides highlighted the positive trends in their bilateral dialogue and effective cooperation on international platforms. They also agreed on the need to strengthen legislative collaboration.
Margarida Talapa expressed gratitude for the invitation to visit Russia and participate in the Environmental Congress. "Russia has always provided us with help and support. The people of Mozambique appreciate this and value their friendship with Russia," she said.
At her meeting with the Speaker of CAR's National Assembly, Matvienko emphasized the engaged and trusting nature of relations between the two nations, including between their presidents. She also conveyed her warm regards to CAR President Faustin-Archange Touadéra and his spouse.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to further cooperation, especially in the fields of energy, agriculture, mineral resources, and infrastructure projects. They also discussed pressing regional and global issues, while Matvienko stressed the significance of international dialogue on environmental concerns.
Simplice Mathieu Sarandji noted that ties between Russia and CAR are built on honesty, sincerity, and openness. "We are here to seriously address the issues of ecology and climate change, matters that directly impact both Africa and all humanity," he said.
