A rare Martian meteorite, discovered in Niger in 2023, has been auctioned off for an astonishing $4.3 million. According to Sotheby's auction house, this specimen is the largest Martian fragment ever found on Earth.

Designated NWA 16788, this extraordinary meteorite weighs 24.5 kilograms and measures 38.1 centimeters in length. It surpasses the next largest Martian rock by a remarkable 70%. To date, only around 400 Martian meteorites have been identified worldwide, making this discovery extremely valuable to collectors and scientists alike.

Notably, about 21% of the meteorite is composed of a glass-like material called maskelynite. This unusual substance forms when a powerful asteroid impact causes the original feldspar mineral on Mars to melt and transform under intense heat and pressure, ultimately turning into glass. Such impacts are so violent that pieces of Mars are ejected from the planet's surface, eventually finding their way to Earth.

This sale highlights not only the fascination with space-related artifacts, but also the growing interest in rare natural wonders at international auctions. Experts note that findings like NWA 16788 offer valuable insight into the geology and history of Mars, sparking further research into the Red Planet's mysteries.
