Kenyan President William Ruto has promised a $4.6 million reward to the national football team if they win the African Nations Championship (CHAN). According to Kenyans, Ruto announced the cash incentive during a meeting with the players in Nairobi on Saturday, August 2.
"Friends, it doesn't get any better than this. We've tripled the bonuses so that everyone gives their best," Ruto declared.
He detailed a phased payout plan in case of the team's success: $464,500 for reaching the quarter-finals, $542,000 for the semi-finals, and $697,000 for participating in the final, scheduled for August 30 in Nairobi. Additionally, each player will receive $7,741 for a match win and half that amount for a draw.
The tournament, organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), will last a month and take place across three East African countries: Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. Historically, the Kenyan team has not advanced beyond the group stage.
On August 1, the Chad Football Federation announced the appointment of Swiss Raoul Savoy as the head coach of the national team. Savoy previously coached teams in Gambia and the Central African Republic, as well as Algerian clubs.
