Heavy Snowfall Disrupts KwaZulu-Natal: Road Closures and Hazards

KZN Hit by Unusual Snowstorm

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) experienced an unexpected and significant snowfall in September 2024, causing widespread disruptions. The snowfall, considered unusual for the province, blanketed roads, leading to dangerous travel conditions and road closures across key routes. The N3 highway, a major artery connecting Johannesburg to Durban, was heavily impacted, trapping motorists for hours and forcing many to spend the night in their vehicles. This severe weather event also affected other key routes, including the R617 between Kokstad and Underberg, and parts of the N11 and N2 highways.

Road Closures and Travel Warnings

The provincial Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) quickly responded, urging motorists to delay their travel plans due to the hazardous conditions. The N3 highway between Harrismith and Tugela Toll remained closed for long stretches as emergency teams worked to assist stranded vehicles. Other major routes, such as the R74 and sections of the N2 Ingeli, were under close monitoring as snow and black ice made driving perilous.

In addition to snow, heavy rain caused flooding in areas like the R102 Tongaat Old Mill River, further complicating travel. Some vehicles were trapped in these flooded regions, stretching disaster management efforts as they navigated both snow and flood-related incidents.

A Province on Alert

While the snowfall brought beautiful scenery to parts of KZN, it also underscored the vulnerabilities of infrastructure to extreme weather events. Motorists are advised to exercise caution, avoid non-essential travel, and stay updated on weather alerts. The province's disaster management teams remain on high alert, coordinating responses to ensure public safety as they navigate through the snow and flood-induced challenges. With weather conditions expected to ease soon, KZN residents and travelers are reminded to stay vigilant until roads are fully cleared and safe for use.
