Fire Occurs at Libya's Largest Oil Field

A fire broke out on a pipeline at Libya's largest oil field, Sharara, on March 18, and the blaze was successfully extinguished, the National Oil Corporation of Libya (NOC) reported on March 19.

The cause of the fire on March 18 was an oil leak through a valve at the 538-kilometer mark of the export pipeline south of Zintan. Firefighting and emergency response teams successfully contained and extinguished the fire, and repair work is underway. No injuries were reported during the incident.

"NOC confirms that the fire has been completely extinguished, and the cooling phase is currently underway," the statement read.

It was specified that after the incident, the oil flow was redirected through other pipelines, and production at the field was only 50% suspended. Repairs to the affected structures have already begun, and according to NOC's forecast, operations at the field will resume in full on March 20.

"After the leak that caused the fire, operations continued at a reduced level by redirecting production through alternative pipelines. Currently, about 50% of the field's capacity is in operation. ... Production is expected to return to normal levels within the next 24 hours," the release stated.

In May 2025, an oil spill occurred on a pipeline south of the city of Zawiya in Libya.

The NOC is a state corporation established in 1970 to manage the country's entire oil and gas sector. It is headquartered in Tripoli and serves as the sole legitimate state operator in the oil sector across the country.
