A court in Egypt has sentenced the captain of a tourist submersible that sank in Hurghada in March with Russian tourists on board to two years in prison and a fine of 2,000 Egyptian pounds ($42). This was reported by the local news portal Al-Youm as-Sabia, citing the court's decision.

The captain of the submersible was officially charged with involuntary manslaughter and negligent harm based on the report detailing the causes of the submarine's sinking.

The engineer responsible for the submersible's maintenance was sentenced to six months in prison and a fine of 1,000 Egyptian pounds ($21). Additionally, legal proceedings continue in Egypt against one of the hotel officials who fled the scene after the submersible's accident.

In late March, the Russian Consulate General in Hurghada reported that a tourist submersible carrying 45 tourists from Russia had been involved in an accident during a regular excursion to view a coral reef. Seven people, including two children, died, while 38 were rescued, with 14 of them hospitalized in Egypt. The Russian Investigative Committee launched a criminal case regarding the incident.
