Egypt has drilled two wells for oil and gas extraction in the eastern part of the Sahara Desert. This was announced by the country's Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources on January 1.

According to preliminary estimates, oil production from the new wells is expected to reach approximately 1,650 barrels per day, with gas production at 538,000 cubic meters per day. Drilling was carried out by the Italo-Egyptian company Agiba Petroleum.

"In line with the ministry's strategy to increase local production, Agiba Petroleum has successfully completed the drilling of two wells, 'Dorra-36' and 'West Yasmin-3,' to boost production volumes within its concession area in the [Sahara] Desert, utilizing the latest drilling and geological assessment technologies to ensure optimal technical and economic results," the statement said.

The ministry noted that the wells are scheduled to be commissioned "in the near future."

In October, Egypt's Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, stated that the country plans to drill 480 new exploration wells for oil and gas by 2030, with total investments in the project exceeding $5.7 billion.
