Egypt and Somalia Hold Consultations to Deepen Strategic Partnership

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty received his Somali counterpart, Abdisalam Abdi Ali, on February 5. The sides held consultations on deepening their strategic partnership, according to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.

Abdelatty emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation between the two countries in the areas of security, trade, infrastructure, electric power, the pharmaceutical industry, and agriculture. He also noted the need to continue increasing trade turnover and recalled the upcoming opening of a branch of the Egyptian bank Misr in the Somali capital, Mogadishu.

Furthermore, the head of the Egyptian Foreign Ministry stated that Cairo supports Somalia's sovereignty and territorial integrity and does not accept "the creation of parallel entities outside the framework of international law," a statement widely interpreted as referring to Ethiopia's recent memorandum of understanding with the breakaway region of Somaliland.

This meeting builds on ongoing high-level engagement. In September 2025, Somali Defense Minister Ahmed Maallim Fiqi and his Egyptian counterpart, Abdel Maguid Sakr, discussed strengthening military partnership between the countries. During the meeting in Cairo, the parties expressed support for efforts to ensure peace and stability in the region.
