Côte d'Ivoire and Japan have signed a grant agreement worth 6 billion CFA francs ($11 million) to strengthen road infrastructure in Abidjan. This was announced by the African country's Ministry of Economy, Finance and Budget.

"Minister of Economy Adama Coulibaly and the Permanent Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Motoharu Wakabayashi, signed ... a grant agreement for 6 billion CFA francs for the project to strengthen road maintenance equipment in Abidjan," the ministry's statement read.

Coulibaly noted that the funds would be directed toward improving road maintenance through the supply of specialized equipment, and expressed hope that the agreement would help optimize traffic flow in the country's largest city.

"The grant agreement ... represents much more than just technical support. ... It will contribute to increasing the speed and efficiency of repair work, the long-term preservation of the road fund, and ensuring smoother traffic flow in Abidjan," the minister stated.

The JICA Permanent Representative reaffirmed Japan's commitment to continued cooperation and announced the signing in March of two loan agreements totaling 80 billion CFA francs ($140 million) for the construction of three transport interchanges and strengthening local governance.

In August 2025, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, following the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), stated that the country intends to develop cooperation with African nations in the areas of "economy, society, peace, and stability."
