Citizens of Burkina Faso have donated 212.86 billion CFA francs (approximately $381 million) through the Patriotic Support Fund (FSP) to aid the country's fight against terrorism. This was announced by the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Burkina Faso.
"From January 1 to December 30, 2025, the FSP managed to mobilize 212.86 billion CFA francs, exceeding the target of 150 billion CFA francs," the ministry's statement said.
The Patriotic Support Fund was established to support the country's armed forces during the fight against terrorism in the Sahel. Due to low levels of external funding, the FSP's goal is to ensure sustainable financing for Burkina Faso's army. Since its creation, the fund has raised a total of over 376 billion CFA francs (approximately $673 million) to support the military.
Earlier in December, Burkina Faso's Minister of Defense, Célestin Simporé, announced an intensification of the fight against terrorism in the Sahel region in 2026.
For over a decade, affiliates of the Islamic State* and Al-Qaeda* have been operating in the Sahel, destabilizing the situation in Burkina Faso and its neighbors Mali and Niger. Militants established a foothold in northern Mali following a separatist Tuareg rebellion in 2012. Since then, Islamist militants have spread to other countries across the Sahel.
