The Arab League has condemned the decision by the Somaliland region to open an embassy in Jerusalem, according to a press release following a phone call between Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
"They discussed developments in Somalia and the region, particularly the danger of Israeli infiltration into the Horn of Africa. Both sides condemned reports that the authorities of the self-proclaimed Somaliland region have opened an embassy in ... Jerusalem, calling this step unacceptable and legally invalid. ... They also emphasized the need for coordinated efforts to counter this step," the statement read.
Additionally, during the conversation, the sides underscored their mutual commitment to supporting stability and peace in the Horn of Africa region, as well as the need to preserve Somalia's territorial integrity and prevent any party from encroaching on the sovereignty of a member state of the Arab League, the African Union, and the UN.
"Ahmed Aboul Gheit, for his part, reaffirmed the Arab League's readiness to provide full support to Somalia in all steps it takes to confront any pressure and attempts threatening its sovereignty and territorial integrity," the release stated.
Earlier in May, Somaliland's ambassador, Mohamed Omar Hagi, presented his credentials to Israeli President Isaac Herzog and announced plans to establish an embassy in Jerusalem. Somalia's Foreign Ministry condemned Somaliland's decision.
