President of Niger Abdourahamane Tchiani and Algerian leader Abdelmadjid Tebboune held talks focusing on security coordination, as well as cooperation in infrastructure, energy, and trade. This was reported by the Algerian president's office.

During the meeting, the leaders reaffirmed the equal and independent nature of their bilateral relations.

"The parties reaffirmed their commitment to the fundamental principles of their relations, namely respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of each state, and non-interference in internal affairs," the statement emphasized.

The heads of state also agreed to intensify coordination in border control, counterterrorism, and combating transnational crime. They also decided to maintain regular political dialogue at the highest level.

"The presidents agreed ... to convene the joint Algerian-Nigerien Supreme Commission in Niamey before the end of the first half of 2026, as well as to hold regular political and sectoral consultations," the statement indicated.

Furthermore, the sides agreed to accelerate the finalization of agreements in the areas of geological exploration, entrepreneurship support, telecommunications, digitalization, culture, youth policy, sports, and education.

Tchiani and Tebboune paid particular attention to interregional infrastructure projects.

"The presidents agreed to accelerate the completion of the Trans-Saharan Highway project and other infrastructure projects linking the two countries, in particular the cross-border fiber-optic network and the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline," the statement read.

The meeting also discussed possible measures to facilitate trade, develop cross-border infrastructure, and prepare a project for an integrated cooperation zone.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Tchiani invited his Algerian counterpart to pay a state visit to Niger.

Earlier in February, Tebboune ordered the return of Algeria's ambassador to Niger. The country's Foreign Ministry emphasized that this decision followed the return and resumption of work by Niger's ambassador to Algeria.

Tensions in diplomatic relations between Algeria and Niger had previously been strained over territorial security issues. In April 2025, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger—members of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES)—recalled their ambassadors from the North African country in response to Algeria shooting down a Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) drone. Algeria took mirror measures. The AES emphasized that the destruction of the FAMa drone had hindered the neutralization of a terrorist group planning attacks against the alliance.
