African States Look to EU for Support Amid Trump’s Drastic Aid Cuts

6-10-930x530

President Trump's executive orders to withdraw from the WHO and shut down USAID are forcing African nations to reconsider their traditional aid partners. With the US drastically reducing its financial contributions to global health, climate, and development, Africa now faces a significant funding gap amid worsening climate impacts and health challenges. In response, experts argue that the European Union, which previously stepped in when the US cut WHO funding in 2020, must seize the opportunity to invest heavily in Africa.

Currently, the EU intends to mobilize up to €300 billion in sustainable investments by 2027—half of which is targeted at Africa—and is expected to expand its role in regional initiatives. Analysts emphasize that boosting EU engagement will not only benefit Africa's development but also enhance the bloc's geopolitical influence, particularly as China ramps up its investment in the continent.
